Elementary zoning reviewed

Zoning matters related to Lehighton's proposed elementary center off 1 Indian Lane have been referred to the borough's planning commission for review and comment.

The borough's zoning hearing board last week reviewed requests for a height variance.The maximum height in that zoning district per the ordinance is 35 feet, while the borough has proposed 49.5 feet.The board referred the matter to the borough's planning commission for review and comment, according to borough zoning officer Tim Dow.The next scheduled zoning hearing board meeting is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 19.Meanwhile, the planning commission is scheduled to meet Nov. 10, he said.Under the plan, the 146,000-square-foot elementary center will house all K-5 students. East Penn, Mahoning, Franklin and Shull-David elementary schools would close.
