Council talks trash, recycling

Nesquehoning Borough Council wants to remind residents on a few trash related items.

First, the week of Labor Day, trash pickups will be delayed by a day. That means that trash will be picked up at Lake Hauto on Tuesday and the estates and borough on Thursday.Second, the recycling bins are not meant for trash. There has been some problems recently with people dropping off items that cannot be recycled. This creates a problem for both the borough and the company that picks up the recycling.Councilman Mark Stromelo said that there will be an electronics recycling event held in the borough on Oct. 15.The event, which will take place from 2-5 p.m. at the recycling bins on Locust Street, will take the following items free of charge: desktop and laptop computers, keyboards and mice, printers, fax machines, floor copiers, cables and cords, telephones and cellphones, calculators and adding machines, UPS battery backups, toner and ink cartridges, audio visual equipment and plotters, filing cabinets, projectors, DVD players and VCRs, gaming systems, stereos and speakers, microwaves and small appliances, metal items, exercise equipment, car batteries (sealed lead acid) and car routers, bed frames and rain spouting, washers and dryers, stoves (ranges) and dishwashers.Additional items can be recycled but include a fee. They are: televisions under 42 inches, $35; wooden cabinet, projection, big screen televisions, $50; tube-type CRT monitors, $12 (tube type); LCD monitors, $7; air conditioners, $25; dehumidifiers, $25; refrigerators, $30; and floor freezers, $30. Televisions must be complete. No broken TVs will be accepted.Destruction services are available for a fee, including offsite hard drive destruction, $10 per drive; and offsite document destruction, $10 per standard paper size box. Both includes a certificate of destruction.Only cash and checks accepted. Checks should be made payable to Responsible Recycling Services or RRS.
