150th committee discusses plans for fireworks

As Lehighton's Sesquicentennial countdown continues, John Kemps, owner of Celebrations Pyrotechnics in Slatington, spoke to the council about the fireworks display that will light up the sky for the borough's 150th anniversary.

Location is the key for any firework display, especially such a momentous occasion.Kemps, along with Sesquicentennial Committee Chairman Clark Ritter, plan to shoot the fireworks from the top of the borough building on Constitution Avenue. The vantage point would be ideal for the spectators of the show since the celebration will take place in the middle of town. The only issue is the rubber rooftop."Rubber and fireworks don't really mix," Kemps said. But not to worry, Kemps has a plan."We will use close proximity works. They can be found in an indoor arena. Like on the Wells Fargo building for New Year's Eve. Close proximity fireworks do not leave burning fallout," Kemps said.Kemps also assured the council that his company carries plenty of liability insurance. There will be safety precautions taken as well. Someone from Celebrations will be waiting on a lift, and fire personnel will be ready with water extinguishers. In order to have a colorful display, Kemps wants to mix in small shell that will be about an inch in diameter."These shells have less recoil than a rifle," he said.Councilman John Kreitz asked Kemps for a demonstration, which Kemps agreed to without hesitation.Ritter said he would arrange something with the borough for the demonstration on top of the building.
