Dealing with the effects of trauma

The American Psychiatric Association provided tips for dealing with trauma:

•When something happens, remember that your reactions are normal. You may find that you react to sights, sounds, smells and textures that were present at the time of the crime and which remind you of the incident.• Sometimes being exposed to a traumatic event may trigger memories of past events in your life. Perhaps you have been victimized before, or have lost someone close to you. You may once again find yourself experiencing feelings related to these earlier events. Pay attention to your need to feel safe again.• Allow yourself time to heal at your own pace.• Seek support from your family, friends, co-workers, and possibly professional counseling and victim support groups.• It's easy to get wrapped up in thinking that forgiveness is just about something you "should do." But forgiving can in a practical way be extremely beneficial for you. As long as you don't forgive someone, you are linked to that person. Your thoughts will return to the person who wronged you and what he or she did over and over again.
