Palmerton board votes to oust teacher

A former Palmerton boys basketball coach likely will be relieved of his teaching duties in the district.

On an 8-0 measure, the school board on Tuesday approved the notice of dismissal charges for Michael Stefanek. Director Darlene Yeakel was absent.Superintendent Scot Engler said Stefanek is a social studies teacher in the junior high school.After the meeting, Engler declined to comment further, citing personnel reasons.Stefanek previously served as the high school boys basketball coach in the 2011 season, as well as the first four games of the 2012 season.In December 2012, Stefanek submitted his resignation from his then coaching position, citing "internal and external factors of the basketball program," and "personal concerns."The team finished with a 3-19 record in 2011 and was off to an 0-4 start in the 2012 season when Stefanek submitted his resignation.Stefanek previously coached at Marian Catholic, where his basketball team compiled a record of 171-137, as the Colts consistently made the district playoffs.In other business, the board:• Approved Jill Ann Figner, Megan Wagner, Melissa Frederickson, and Laura Coulson as day-to-day substitute teachers.• Approved Elizabeth Hilaire as a long-term substitute at the rate of $38,319, prorated, Bachelors 1, through the end of the second marking period.• Approved Michelle Lawrence as a short-term sub from Dec. 2 through Jan. 30, at the rate of $120 a day.• Approved Bronwyn Green as a short-term sub from Dec. 2-15 at the rate of $120 a day.• Approved Jessica Peifly as a short-term sub, anticipated from Dec. 11-23, at the rate of $120 a day.• Approved Alexis Lloyd as a short-term sub, anticipated Dec. 11-23, at the rate of pay of $120 a day.• Removed Judith Hall from the substitute list as per her request.• Approved Dan Heaney to attend the Standard Align System Institute Conference Dec. 7-9 in Hershey, at the cost of the district of $407.• Approved Tricia Wampole, Pam Andrews, Kaitlyn Andrews, Marcy Zelinsky, Kelly Ruddick, Lynn Sutton, Kathryn McKeon, Stacey Olewine, Sue Deam, and William Zeky (sub) for the After School Program, Dec. 2 through March 30, for about three hours a week at the rate of $29 per hour, to be paid from Title I funds.• Appointed Matthew Sawarynski as the new Carbon County Tax Collection Commission representative for Palmerton Area School District.• Approved the donation of The Tree Cat by Jackie McFadden to the S.S. Palmer Elementary library, donated by her cousin, Nancy Rausch.• Accepted the donation of $100 from the Towamensing

P.T.O., Inc. to the Palmerton Area High School National Honor Society Activity Club for baby-sitting services for meetings.• Accepted the donation of books from the 2014-15 S.S. Palmer/Parkside PTO to the Parkside Education Center library.• Accepted the donation of funds from the S.S. Palmer PTO to the S.S. Palmer Yearbook Activity Club in the amount of $945 to purchase yearbooks for the sixth grade class, effective Oct. 30.• Approved the Perkiomen Tours & Travel Bus Transportation Service contract for the Palmerton Area Junior High National Honor Society field trip to Oriole Park & Camden Yards on May 13.
