Employers look for a few good workers

Job seekers in Carbon County will have an opportunity on Wednesday to make a good first impression on a potential employer.

A Carbon County Job and Career Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall.Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation and PA CareerLink are again joining forces to bring employers to Carbon County to help reduce the unemployment rate.More than 450 jobseekers attended the spring job fair last year, and 300 attended the fall job fair. The hope is that even more will take advantage of this spring job fair, said administrator Garry Wentz."Some employers will do interviews at the job fair, while some employers will be directing potential employees to their website, as that may be the way that company handles applications," Wentz said.While the first impression you make on a potential employer is the most important one, Wentz said that it's also important not to overdress for entry-level positions.Wentz said that some employers will be accepting resumes at the job fair, while others have their own application. He said many companies are now accepting applications on their websites year-round. He noted that job seekers should continue to update resumes and to bring several copies with them."Some employers have various ways of recruiting," said Wentz.Applicants who want to make a better impression should be wearing clean, neat clothing.Companies, schools and community service providers from Carbon and the surrounding counties will be attending this event.Sue Fezenko, of human resources at Split Rock Resort and Golf Club, said a variety of jobs are available at Split Rock: busing, housekeeping, front desks, life guard and banquet manager.Pencor Services is seeking employees to work in various offices, including a part-time reporter, freelance correspondents and a summer intern for the Times News.Blue Ridge Cable is seeking a field crew employee and intern; PenTeleDala needs customer service, network support, network specialists and tech support; Blue Ridge Communications needs people to work in customer service.Jennifer Brownmiller will be representing the Pencor Services at the job fair."People can apply right online for any of the positions and attach their resumes," said Brownmiller. "We will have a few paper applications to fill out, but my job will be to drive people to the website to fill out applications."Additional employers scheduled to attend are Advance Auto Parts, Bayada Home Health Care, East Penn Manufacturing, Express Employment Professionals, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Hazleton Army Recruiting Center, Heritage Hill Senior Community, Insource Performance Solutions, Kovatch/KME Fire Apparatus, Nestle Purina PetCare, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission, Reynolds Presto Products, Romark Logistics, Structural Metal Fabricators, United States Air Force, Wal-Mart Distributing Bethlehem, Weatherwood Nursing and Rehab Center, WMGH/WLSH Radio.For more information, visit
