Hometown explosion a mystery

It may have been an M-80 or other powerful device, but no trace could be found and no official explanation has been offered for a loud blast that rocked the northeast section of Hometown at midnight Saturday.

Police and 911 received calls from residents in the vicinity of Oxford Street and Cumberland Avenue, although the event was heard throughout the entire neighborhood west of Route 309.Police responded and searched the area but no damage was apparent.Residents said it sounded like a small explosion followed immediately by a large, powerful boom that shook the residential neighborhood and awakened unsuspecting homeowners.Some believe it came from the vicinity of Miller Park, although nothing has been confirmed and the source has not been determined.
