A blast from the past.

That's exactly what St. John Neumann Regional School students were in for as they sifted through the contents relative to their school that were revealed from inside Palmerton's Centennial Time Capsule.School Principal Sister Virginia Stephanie recently opened the historic package with the students one afternoon."It was really magical," Sister Stephanie said. "Our students were amazed by the history, and enjoyed reading the letters. Some were from their own relatives who attended the school back 25 years ago".Among the items found were letters and drawings from students who attended the school 25 years ago; a black and white yearbook from 1986-87; pictures and letters from the staff; and a copy of the school's official handbook, the latter of which highlighted parental responsibilities, discipline, homework requirements, the school's philosophy, and detention.That wasn't all, as students wrote about their dream jobs for the future, which included becoming a swim coach, professional football players, a zoologist, and even a "gas man".Designed by the late Warren E. Siegmond and built by the New Jersey Zinc Co., the rocket, named the S.S. Palmer Enterprise, was buried in the southwest corner of the borough park on Oct. 8, 1988.The Time Capsule was then dug up in August by Matt Lang, of Lang's Landscaping & Tree Service, Palmerton, in preparation for the construction of the Palmerton Veterans Memorial. The veterans memorial was dedicated this past Veterans Day.Representatives of the Palmerton Area Historical Society, assisted by members of the Aquashicola Fire Company - under the direction of Rory Koons - opened the relic in the borough garage with the use of grinding equipment.The items are available at the Palmerton Heritage Center to the organizations, individuals and relatives to whom they were addressed.
