St. Luke's awards academic scholarships

Bill Moyer, President of St. Luke's Hospital - Miners Campus; Craig A. Zurn, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; and radiologist James D. Bohri, MD, President of the Medical Staff, recently awarded the recipients of the St. Luke's Miners Hospital Board of Trustees Scholarship and the St. Luke's Miners Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship.

Both scholarships, each $500, and totalling $6,000, were presented to graduating seniors from six local area high schools who met the criteria of the award. The criteria required each recipient to be in the top 25 percent of their graduating class and be enrolled as a full time student in an accredited four year college or university in the field of Health Care or Science."We are honored to be able to provide these scholarships to area youth who are pursuing educations and careers in the allied health field," said Moyer. "We hope that these students will return upon completion of their respective educations to provide specialty services to our community."Receiving the Board of Trustees Scholarships were Geoffry O'Brien, Jim Thorpe Area H.S., intending to major in Pre-med at Stony Brook University; Taylor Gandy, Lehighton Area H.S., intending to major in Biology/Premed at Bloomsburg University, Amber Carroll, Tamaqua Area H.S., intending to major in Biology/Premed at Bucknell University; Danielle L. Tristani, Marian Catholic H.S., intending to major in Physician's Assistant at King's College; Lisa Lin, Panther Valley Area H.S., intending to major in Nursing at Cedar Crest College; Tyler Bernadyn, Mahanoy Area H.S.; intending to major in Pre-Med at Albright College; and Alyssa Lynn Miller, Weatherly Area H.S., intending to major in Medical Technology at Penn State.Receiving the Medicall Staff Scholarships were Chelsea Smelas, Jim Thorpe Area H.S., intending to major in Pharmacy at Wilkes University; Nicole Myrtle, Lehighton Area H.S., intending to major in Nursing at LCC and Indiana University of PA; Kayla Hope, Tamaqua Area H.S., intending to major in Physical Therapy at Penn State; Samantha M. O'Donnell, Marian Catholic H.S., intending to major in Occupational Therapy at Alvernia University; Courtney Lazar, Panther Valley Area H.S., intending to major in Pharmacy at University of the Sciences, Philadephia; Douglas Aaron Wells, Jr., Mahanoy City Area H.S., intending to major in Pre-med at University of Pittsburgh and Sarah Michelle Dolinsky, Weatherly Area H.S., intending to major in Pre-Med/Biochemistry at Penn State.
