Students at Mahoning Elementary School proved they were proficient in the books of Dr. Seuss on Wednesday, when the school participated in the seventh annual "Who Wants to be a Millionaire Game," which is modeled after the popular television game show. All of the questions pertained to Dr. Seuss books. The children played for large boxes of crayons, stuffed animals, books, games and movies.

The school assembly began with The Grinch stepping forward in the quest of becoming the game show host, but the Grinch was chased away by the Lorax, who then took over the host position as the children cheered. Host Lorax was assisted by Thing 1 (Cheyann Marx) and Thing 2 (Jason Miklus), first grade students at the school to distribute prizes to the winners.It was easy to see why the Lorax triumphed over the Grinch to be the show host. The Lorax is a grumpy and charming creature who fights to protect the world, while the Grinch has a devious, anti-holiday spirit that the children booed.Throughout the show, the contestants were quizzed on all things Dr. Seuss.Proving he was an expert on Dr. Seuss was kindergarten student Aiden Gruber, who answered all 14 questions correctly by himself to win four prizes.Among the questions Aiden knew was that the Lorax was orange and that the Cat in the Hat wore a red bow tie and that his hat was red and while. Throughout the morning, the children were challenged with questions that grew harder with each level.Reading specialist Marsha Long assisted the host Lorax during the program. The program was organized by Cale Kresge, third grade teacher.If the contestants didn't know the question, they could phone a friend, ask to have two of the four answers covered or they could ask their classmates for help.The entire school prepared for the program by reading and discussing Dr. Seuss books. The five students taking part in the game were, Aiden Gruber and Lena Robin, kindergarten; Brenna Eckhart, first grade; Gabrielle Steigerwalt, second grade; Christian Poplin, third grade; and Bryanna Berger, fourth grade.The winners of the school's Dr. Seuss poster contest were also announced during the program. Winners this year included Mykayla Engle and Abigail Hoppes, fourth grade; Emily DeKorte and Alanna Boehm, third grade; Callie Hayman, second grade; Amya Nevengloski and Adrianne Leiby, first grade, and Jude Litts, kindergarten.
