Light project nears completion

Carbon County is starting to save on its light bills.

On Thursday, Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard announced that the project, which calls for installing new lights in the county courthouse, courthouse annex, 76 Susquehanna St. building and prison, is nearing completion. He said representatives from Electric Power Savers of Camp Hill, which was awarded the contract for the project in December, said the courthouse, annex and Susquehanna Street buildings were complete and crews would be working on the prison next and expect to finish by Friday. The county has until Feb. 28 to complete the project under the terms of the grants secured for the project. The nearly $110,000 project included installing 40 LED exit signs, 1,583 fluorescent light conversion kits and 127 light fixture kits in the four buildings. The county hired Electric Power Savers in December to install the fixtures after the company submitted the apparent low bid of $38,400. The equipment was purchased from Grainger and Friedman Electric through the Pennsylvania State Costars program at a cost of $70,779.The project is covered through grants, a rebate and annual savings. The county received a $48,284 matching grant from Northeast Pennsylvania Alliance through the NEPA Efficient Lighting Grant program; and an additional $19,861 from NEPA after another county cut part of its project, freeing up some funds. In addition, there is an anticipated PPL rebate of approximately $33,000 that the county should receive once the project is finished.Previously Commissioner William O'Gurek said after the project is complete, the county will see an annual savings of $23,806 on its light bills. The lighting retrofit project has been in the works for approximately three years. In other matters, the county approved the following items:• Approved Senior Community Center Grant agreements between the county, Carbon County Area Agency on Aging and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, effective Feb. 2 to Jan. 31, 2016. The agreement provides $2,750 for the purchase and installation of a large-screen TV and Wii at the Palmerton Senior Center; $4,500 for the purchase and installation of a large-screen TV and PA system at the Panther Valley Senior Center; and $1,200 for the purchase and installation of a large-screen TV at the Weatherly Senior Center.• Approved an agreement with Joseph Butrie for snow and ice removal at the Lansford Magistrate's office. The cost is $75 per each instance, payable at the end of the month.• Approved a lease extension dated April 1, 2014, with Lori Knox of Jim Thorpe for the operation of the boat rental concession stand at Mauch Chunk Lake Park for two additional automatic renewal options for two annual terms with a final termination date of March 31, 2019.
