Saving power, saving money

Purchasing electricity from a lower-priced electric supplier is only one way to save money, says Paul Canevari, the regional manager of PPL Electric Utilities.

If you're looking to cut costs, it's important to also look into where your home or business is using energy, and how to cut back. Heating and cooling are a large portion of most home electricity bills, he noted."Turning the thermostat down one degree saves about 2 percent on your heating bill," he said. "Turning it down five degrees saves about 10 percent. Regular maintenance of your heating system will also improve its efficiency and extend its life."Using a programmable thermostat can also save substantial energy by lowering the temperature in your home while you sleep and work outside the house. It's also important to keep that precious heat inside the home this winter. Sealing leaks in air ducts can cut heating costs by up to 20 percent, as can reducing drafts from doors and windows."Adjust the temperature of your hot water heater to 120 degrees," he advised.Higher temperatures are often unnecessary. Taking shorter showers, and using cold water to wash clothing can also cut back on electricity use to heat water. Finally, remember to turn off gadgets and lights when you're not using them. Televisions, gaming consoles and room lights use substantial energy if constantly turned on when not in use."A lot of these things are common sense, but can make a big difference," said Canevari.
