Bears capture Red Rover V-ball Classic

The Pleasant Valley volleyball team captured its second tournament championship of the season, winning the Easton Red Rover Classic on Saturday. Earlier this month, the Bears won their own tournament.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALLLehighton, Pleasant Valley, Panther Valley at Easton Red Rover ClassicPleasant Valley pulled off a tournament championship at the 11th Annual Easton Rover Classic.The Lady Bears split with Northampton in their opening match of the tournament, 23-25 and 25-20. Pleasant Valley followed that up with sweeps of Pottsville, 25-17, 25-13, MaST Academy, 25-13, 25-14, and Panther Valley, 25-9, 25-16, to finish first in their pool.In the semifinals, Pleasant Valley downed Lehighton 25-11, 25-22, and then met with Northampton again in the finals. The Bears pulled off a 25-23, 25-20 win to take the title.In the semis, senior Mackenzie Dorney recorded her career 1,000th dig.For the tournament, Pleasant Valley got strong individual efforts from Dorney (22 kills, 30 digs, four aces); Courtney Miller (30 kills, 10 blocks); Ashley Rivera (27 kills and 21 digs); Kiersten Griesback (52 assists, 19 digs, six aces).Marian-Holy RedeemerHoly Redeemer defeated Marian, 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19 in a non-league match between a pair of state ranked teams..Redeemer came into the match ranked 6th in Class AA in the latest Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association state rankings. The Fillies are ranked 9th in Class A.Abby O'Donnell paced the Marian attack with 27 assists and 15 digs, while Grace Boyle chipped in with 13 digs, five kills and two aces. The Fillies' Emily Pilla (seven kills, six digs), Maureen Kloap (10 kills, five digs) and Lauren Nietz (12 digs) also played well.North Schuylkill-NorthwesternNorthwestern defeated North Schuylkill in five games, 18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 15-10.The Tigers also pulled out a straight-set win in the JV game, as well.BOYS SOCCERLehighton-Jim ThorpeLehighton took down Jim Thorpe, 5-0, for the non-league shutout.Anthony Rossino scored twice for the winners, while Derek Berger, Dan Baka and Joe Marks all contributed single goals. Chris Lawler, Anthony Farano, Nick Hill and Cole Christman all chipped in assists for the Tribe.Tyler Dietz had five saves in the shutout effort in goal for Lehighton. Zach Nace had 10 saves for the Olympians.Catasauqua-TamaquaCatasauqua pulled out a 4-2 decision over Tamaqua.Josh Delp and Roberto Borrero scored goals for the Blue Raiders. Teammate Dylan Rinkiewicz had seven saves in the goal.Steve Leon scored two goals for the Rough Riders.FIELD HOCKEYSalisbury-No. LehighNorthern Lehigh blanked Salisbury in a Colonial League game, 6-0.Jess Olewine led the Lady Bulldogs with a goal and three assists. Kelsey Follweiler, Taryn Kemmerer, Cheyenne Mazzocca, Julie Knerr and Shannon Weil all had a goal for the winners. Erika McKay had an assist.Nolehi outshot it opponent 24-7 in the game. Ronnie Green stoppeed six shots to record the shutout.Moravian A.-NorthwesternMoravian Academy blanked Northwestern in a Colonial League battle, 6-0.Dana Turner scored twice for the Lions.The Tigers were outshot 12-6 in the contest.Palisades-PalmertonMadison Brader's goal with 1:20 left in the overtime lifted Palisades to a 2-1 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.Jessica Debski's got the Bombers on the board first with a goal in the opening half.The Pirates' Kaelyn Gabriel knotted things up with a goal in the second half.Bombers' keeper Candace Keck finished with 18 saves.Palmerton slips to 4-9 overall and 3-9 in the league.Pleasant Vy.-EastonEaston edged Pleasant Valley, 2-1, in non-league play.Melissa Russo scored the Bears' lone goal off an Alex DiMarco assist.Taylor Mugavero recorded both of the Red Rovers' scores.Rachel Wild posted seven saves in front of the PV cage.GIRLS SOCCERJim Thorpe-TamaquaJim Thorpe defeated Tamaqua, 3-1, in a Schuylkill League battle.After both teams failed to score in the first half, Tayler Kidder got the Olympians on the board in the second half. Teammate Cat Condly scored two more goals as the game went on to seal the win.Lynn Kistler recorded a goal late in the game for the Lady Raiders.Jim Thorpe had a 14-4 advantage in shots. Tamaqua's Carly Sassaman had 11 saves.With the win, the Lady Olympians improve to 6-6 on the season.Palmerton-SalisburySalisbury took out Palmerton in a Colonial League match, 6-0.Katie Bucchin and Caylin Meikrantz both scored two goals apiece for the Falcons.Palmerton was outshot 17-4 in the game.
