Nesquehoning man arrested

A Nesquehoning man was charged with entering a borough vehicle and removing a radio.

Borough police said Cody Kmetz, 20, of 3 Second Ave., has been charged with theft by unlawful taking, theft from a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, three counts of prohibited acts-possessing a controlled substance or counterfeit substance.Police said about 7 a.m. on Feb. 28 Officer Dane O'Brien was called to 340 W. Catawissa St. for a report of a vehicle entry. The victims, James Albaugh and Danielle Thoams, reported their 2006 Chevrolet Malibu was entered and removed was a Sirius satellite radio.O'Brien was told by Officer Carl Breiner, who just completed the night shift, that he observed Kmetz in his vehicle in the area of the theft about 4 a.m. Officer Timothy Wuttke, who was working with O'Brien, was notified by employee of the Valero service station that Kmetz was there and pumped $21.08 worth of gas but said he didn't have any money with him and would return in a short time to pay for the gas. He never returned.Police went to Kmetz's home and observed his vehicle in front. In plain view was a Sirius radio in the vehicle.A consent search was given and the identification number on the radio matched that given by the victims.Kmetz at first denied stealing the radio but later admitted to it, police said. A further search of the vehicle revealed small plastic packets, one with a white powdery substance later testing positive for cocaine.Also in the vehicle were empty packets of synthetic marijuana, bongs that Kmetz said he uses to smoke marijuana, and marijuana and a plastic pipe were found, which Kmetz said he used to smoke crack cocaine.Kmetz was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, of Lansford, and committed to the county prison in Nesquehoning in lieu of $10,000 straight cash bail.
