Slatington library book club celebrates third anniversary

The Slatington Public Library Book Club celebrated its third anniversary last Monday.

The club meets on the first Monday of each month to discuss a book that has been selected by a club member for that month.

The selection for November was “Just Like You” by Dr. Nichola Gutgold.

Gutgold is a speech professor at Penn State University.

She is the author of several nonfiction books about women who have paved the way in politics, but who have not been given recognition in the history books.

“Just Like You” is her first novel.

Its main character owns a successful bridal salon, has a great husband and two lovely children, but she is experiencing a midlife crisis.

She lost her parents at a young age and misses them terribly.

An eating disorder is becoming a problem, and she rekindles a relationship with an old boyfriend that puts her daughter in danger.

The author explained the process of putting the story together.

She spoke about many personal incidents that led to the eventual completed book. She is in the process of writing a sequel, and she asked those in attendance to give their opinions on her narrative thus far.

There was a lively conversation about how the author should proceed, and everyone had definite ideas about her characters.

Gutgold is a dynamic speaker with a winning personal style that puts the audience at ease.

She may have even encouraged a few of the people in attendance to try to write their own book.
