Phila. men face drug charges after chase
Two Philadelphia-area men are jailed after authorities say they delivered fentanyl and methamphetamine to Lehighton and then led police on a chase that ended in Lehigh County on Tuesday.
According to court documents, investigators working with confidential informants arranged to buy 2 ounces of methamphetamine for $2,100 from a man known as “Tee,” who was suspected of traveling from Philadelphia to Carbon County to sell drugs.
The meeting was set for about 4:45 p.m. in the parking lot of NAPA Auto Parts on Blakeslee Boulevard East in Lehighton. Authorities provided the informants with $2,100 in prerecorded buy money and monitored the operation.
Just after 5 p.m., a black Honda arrived at the lot. One of the informants entered the vehicle briefly and then exited carrying a red Target bag, signaling that the drug transaction had been completed.
As officers moved in, the Honda sped away, jumping a curb and fleeing through Carbon County communities. Police said the vehicle traveled at high speeds and passed through the busy intersection of Lehigh and Susquehanna streets in downtown Jim Thorpe, creating a danger for pedestrians and motorists.
The pursuit continued into Lehigh County before authorities called it off for safety reasons.
A short time later, a Laurys Station resident reported that a damaged black Honda had pulled into his driveway. Two men got out and ran, with one allegedly breaking a fence while fleeing. Surveillance footage captured the pair running through the neighborhood.
A search involving local, state and federal authorities led to the arrests of Michael Washington, 39, and Donte Jackson, 32. Washington was found hiding in a shed, while Jackson was discovered in bushes a few blocks away, according to the affidavit.
Investigators said Jackson was carrying the $2,100 in prerecorded buy money, along with Suboxone strips and about 5 grams of marijuana.
Informants later identified Washington as the person who handed them the Target bag and said they gave the buy money to Jackson during the transaction.
Authorities recovered the red Target bag, which allegedly contained 237 packets of suspected fentanyl and 58 grams of methamphetamine.
Washington is charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver, conspiracy, fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving and criminal mischief.
Jackson is charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver, criminal use of a communication facility, conspiracy, possession of marijuana and criminal mischief.
Both men remain in Carbon County Correctional Facility. Washington is being held on $150,000 straight bail, while Jackson is being held on $100,000 straight bail. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for Oct. 7 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz in Jim Thorpe.
