Jim Thorpe man faces drug charges following car crash

A Jim Thorpe man is facing drug charges after he crashed his vehicle in Nesquehoning earlier this year.

Corey Ligenza, 23, of Cold Spring Drive, was exiting St. John the Baptist Orthodox Cemetery on June 22 when he crashed his Nissan Sentra into a small tree and bricks along the driveway.

According to the affidavit, filed by Nesquehoning police patrolman Carl Breiner, a Carbon County sheriff’s unit was in the area and the two deputies stopped for the crash. They assisted two medical personnel who were also on scene from Luzerne County medics.

They performed CPR on Ligenza, who was unconscious and administered naloxone after noticing signs that he had overdosed.

Police located his wallet in an attempt to identify the unconscious man, and while doing so, found four packets of suboxone.

When Ligenza regained consciousness, he admitted to doing heroin before the crash. He also told police that there may be more heroin in the vehicle.

Police found eight bags of heroin and a hypodermic needle inside the vehicle.

Ligenza was transported to St. Luke’s Miners Campus, and a blood test revealed the presence of THC, fentanyl and other drugs in his system.

Ligenza has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Damage as a result of the crash totaled $250.

He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek on Dec. 19.
