Anthony, Shaneberger named Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athletes

A pair of former area athletes were recently named Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athletes for the spring sports season.

Palmerton graduate Jon Anthony received his honor for Men’s Outdoor Track & Field, while former Pleasant Valley standout Madison Shaneberger was selected in softball.

Both seniors attended Moravian College.

The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators and sports information directors.

Anthony helped the track & field team sweep the Landmark Conference outdoor and indoor titles during his four years. This spring, he won the Landmark Conference championship in the discus with a meet record and PR toss of 45.58 meters (149-6), which is also the fourth-best throw in program history. Anthony also earned a spot on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team at the outdoor championships with a runner-up finish and PR toss of 44.42 meters (145-9) in the hammer throw.

Off the track, Anthony had a 3.63 GPA while majoring in health sciences with a minor in public health. He is a three-time member of the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, and he made the Landmark Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll three times as well. Anthony was named to Moravian’s Dean’s List six times, and he was part of the Greyhounds’ Chi Alpha Sigma National Athlete Honor Society in both 2018 and 2019. Anthony was a member of Moravian’s Occupational Therapy Club, Bethlehem Salvation Army and Hounds 4 Kids – Hope & Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund.

Shaneberger helped the softball program to a 141-27 record during her four seasons including a 44-4 mark in the Landmark Conference regular season as the Greyhounds reached the postseason each spring, winning the Landmark Conference title in 2018 and 2016 and the NCAA Ewing, New Jersey Regional in 2018. Shaneberger was a three-time Landmark All-Conference honoree, making the First Team in 2019 and 2018 and the Second Team in 2016.

Shaneberger played in 161 of a possible 168 games in her career, going 119-for-410 at the plate for a .290 career average. She added 87 runs, 75 RBIs, 27 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 59 walks, two stolen bases, four sacrifice flies, 18 sacrifice bunts, a .383 on-base percentage and a .434 slugging percentage.

Off the field, Shaneberger had a 3.83 GPA while majoring in accounting with minors in finance and business law. She is a three-time member of the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll. Shaneberger was also on Moravian’s Dean’s List in all eight semesters, and she was part of the Greyhounds’ Chi Alpha Sigma National Athlete Honor Society in both 2018 and 2019. Shaneberger served as the income fund manager for Moravian’s Investment Club, and she was also the public relations manager for the Accounting Club.
