A noise complaint in the early morning hours of Dec. 14 led Tamaqua Police to an underage drinking party at 424 E. Broad St.
Officers were first called to apartment 2 at that address at 3:36 a.m. Loud music and yelling was clearly heard outside the door.When officers knocked, Michael Mattox, 22, answered, apologizing for the loud music, explaining his friend was throwing a bachelor party for him, but everyone hadn't arrived.Officers issued a warning and left.About 30 minutes later, police received another call about loud noise and yelling come from the apartment. An officer arrived and stood outside the door for a few minutes, waiting for backup.In those few minutes, he heard a lot of loud music and yelling that sounded like an arguement between a man and a woman. According to police, the man was yelling at the woman, saying he didn't want the "cops to come back. I have underage kids over."The woman replied she didn't care because "you pointed a gun at me."Officers knocked on the door and heard the man telling someone to "quick, go hide."At this point, when Mattox opened the door, he was handcuffed and asked about the gun. He denied any knowledge of a gun.Officers canvassed the apartment and found a 16-year-old male passed out in the bathroom.A woman then came out of the attic and was identified as Kathy Dee Tonkin, 19, of 324 E. Broad St., Tamaqua. Tonkin was visibly intoxicated and a preliminary breath test was positive, registering 0.18 percent BAC.An ambulance was called for the young man, who was transported to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale.A third male was found sleeping in the attic. Also found in the attic were a glass pipe with marijuana residue, a black scale with green vegetable matter, a small pocket knife and a silver pellet gun.The teens were cited for underage drinking.Mattox was cited for corruption of minors, possession of drug paraphernalia, furnishing alcohol to minors, and disorderly conduct.
