Parkland’s big second half ends Bears’ season

For Pleasant Valley, moral victories only took the Bears so far Tuesday night.

Heading into his team’s District 11 Class 4A boys soccer semifinal, first-year head coach Jonathan Mickens knew his fifth-seeded club faced a challenging task against defending district champion and top-seeded Parkland.

However, the Bears had plenty of momentum after edging Freedom 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Pleasant Valley battled Parkland through a scoreless first half and into the early stages of the second half, but the Trojans eventually broke through and pulled away for a 3-0 victory at Emmaus High School.

The Bears had opportunities to change the outcome.

“We had a handful of chances, including a one-on-one with the goalie, which we just missed wide,” said Mickens. “If we score that chance and go up 1-0, the game is much different.

“We held Parkland at bay for about 60 minutes until we gave up a long shot off a corner. At that point, we started to push more numbers up, which led to goals two and three for Parkland.”

Mickens was pleased with his team’s overall effort.

“The team played very well,” he said. “We had a game plan which focused on being defensively compact and focused on counterattacks.

“We dealt with all of their pressure well and fought through a lot of adversity, especially in the first half with two yellows to key defenders.”

Despite the odds, Pleasant Valley maintained its aggressiveness and determination throughout the contest.

“Until the final whistle, our team gave our best effort to finish strong with a string of shots at the end,” added Mickens. “We knew coming into this game we were very large underdogs, and no matter the result, as long as we stayed organized and disciplined and played strong for our fans and fellow teammates, we were proud of the season.”

While Mickens saw plenty of positives from his team, he particularly praised the contributions of seniors Christian Pinheiro, Lennox Granda, Gavin Lewis and Nate Thompson.

“It’s difficult to choose a single standout,” said Mickens. “The group played well collectively. Christian Pinheiro and Lennox Granda played one of the best games for Pleasant Valley offensively and defensively and looked like two of the best players on the field for both teams.

“In the defense today, the team was also very proud of the performance of Gavin Lewis and Nate Thompson for stepping up and winning their individual battles.”

With his first season at the helm complete, Mickens is eager to build on the experience and continue moving the program forward.

“As a first-year head coach, I was pleased with how the team was able to manage the season throughout the year, and to build on the highest moments and to learn and bounce back from our lowest moments,” reflected Mickens.

“Our resilience was what got us here in district semifinals, as we were able to get a statement win against Freedom in the district quarterfinals. I personally learned a lot as a young coach and young man, which I will look to apply for next year and the years to come.”

MOVING OUT … The Bears will lose 11 seniors, nine of whom were starters this season.

REVENGE SERVED COLD … Last season, Pleasant Valley was eliminated by Freedom 3-1 in the district quarterfinals. This season, the Bears returned the favor.
