Weatherly Borough Council on Monday approved a new union contract with its borough workers after nearly a year of negotiating.

Council voted 6-1 in favor of the collective bargaining agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1319. Mayor Michael Bellizia cast the lone dissenting vote.

Council went into a nearly hour-long executive session to discuss the contract before voting on the pact.

“It has been a daunting 10 months,” Bellizia said. “There’s been a lot of discussion, a lot of back and forth, a lot of time spent.

“I’d like to think that … we’ve come to a suitable agreement that seems to fit everyone’s needs.”

The contract was not available as of press time.

Veterans parade

Council approved a request from the Weatherly American Legion Post 360 for the Carbon County Veterans Parade.

“I think this is the first time in like 25 years that the county Veterans Day Parade has been in Weatherly,” Legion Treasurer Paul Bray said. “So, we’re taking on a big task.”

Bray requested the use of the borough building parking lot, the Legion lot, the Eurana Park Pavilion, Eurana Park and the baseball field for the parade.

The Legion along with the auxiliary is selling raffle tickets as a fundraiser to help offset the cost of the high school marching bands, which amounts to about $450 each, he said.

Bray also invited the mayor and council members to ride in the parade as the dignitaries of the host community.

Council also approved a request from borough police to designate “No Parking” areas for the parade.

The parade is set for Nov. 8. The rain date is Nov. 15.

Council approved a request for a trunk or treat at Eurana Park on Oct. 31. Bellizia said that the Halloween event was a wonderful idea for the community.
