Carbon releases 3-month report

Carbon County Prothonotary Kayla M. Semmel has released a three-month report of activities in that office, showing office personnel accepted and filed 1,173 new cases for the period of March through May.

A breakdown of the new cases included 383 in March, 296 in April and 494 in May.

Semmel reported the new cases in March included: stipulations/waivers of liens, 6; mental health case, 1; name change petition, 7; tax sale, 1; miscellaneous case, 1; quiet title actions, custody modification petitions, 13; writs of execution, 19; auditor financial reports, 2; civil actions, 66; court rule, 1; judgments, 183; custody complaints, 13; district justice appeals, 4; divorce complaints, 14; complaint in ejectment, 1; license appeal, 1; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 11; protection from abuse petitions, 31; and PFSVI-2 cases, 2.

The office generated $41,722.31 in March, including: prothonotary fees, $33,788.71; custody/divorce fees, $1,737.50; data processing fees, $5,279.02; interest income, $245.28; PFA surcharges, sheriff, $66.40; PFA surcharges, courts, $66.40; and stenographer fees, $539.

In addition to the above fees, remitted to the county for the Remote Access Fund for remote access fees was $14,900; remitted to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (fees collected on new cases), $5,917.45; and deposited in the Automation Fund, $1,391.82, representing money collected for future automation and improvements to the office.

The staff members collected $74.80 in sales tax on passport photos taken. They processed 71 new and 25 renewal passports and took 80 passport photos.

Semmel said the breakdown of new cases in April included: stipulations/waivers of liens, 7; mental health cases, 4; miscellaneous case, 1; name change petitions, 3; quiet title actions, 2; petitions to modify custody, 13; writs of execution, 7; auditor financial report, 1; civil actions, 57; civil appeal, 1; court rule, 1; judgments, 130; complaints in custody, 11; district justice appeals, 4; divorce complaints, 14; eminent domain/petition for view, 1; landlord/tenant appeals, 4; license appeals, 2; mortgage foreclosure; complaints in replevin, 2; and protection from abuse petitions, 24.

The office generated $35,173.88 in April, including: prothonotary fees, $26,679.61; custody/divorce fees, $2,516.25; data processing fees, $4,722.87; interest income, $323.90; and stenographer fees, $931.25.

In addition to the above fees, remitted to the county for the Remote Access Fund for remote access fees was $2,000 remitted to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (fees collected on new cases), $4,905.80; and deposited in the Automation Fund, $1,282.31, representing money collected for future automation and improvements to the office.

The staff members collected $41.65 in sales tax on passport photos taken. They processed 45 new and 14 renewal passports and took 49 passport photos.

The 494 cases in May included: stipulations/waivers of liens, 4; mental health cases, 3; miscellaneous cases, 4; name change petitions, 2; paternity suit, 1; quiet title actions, 9; petitions to modify custody, 13; writs of execution, 11; civil actions, 67; civil appeals, 1; judgments, 311; custody complaints, 7; district justice appeals, 3; divorce complaints, 15; complaints in ejectment, 3; eminent domain/declarations of taking, 2; landlord tenant appeals, 2; license appeals, 3; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 10; and protection from abuse petitions, 23.

The office generated $34,944.73 in May, including: prothonotary fees, $27,982.55; custody/divorce fees, $1,900; data processing fees, $4,402.39; interest income, $301.29; and stenographer fees, $358.50.

In addition to the above fees, remitted to the county for the Remote Access Fund for remote access fees was $1,600; remitted to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (fees collected on new cases), $6,147.30; and deposited in the Automation Fund, $1,124.96, representing money collected for future automation and improvements to the office.

The staff members collected $34 in sales tax on passport photos taken. They processed 40 new and 8 renewal passports and took 40 passport photos.
