Steampunk-themed fest takes over Lehighton downtown

A Steampunk-themed festival was held along South First Street, Lehighton, with vendor tents set up along the block, and several local businesses joining in the fun.

Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates retro-futuristic technology and aesthetics prominently inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery and design.

Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the Victorian era or the American frontier where steam power remains in mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.

“We just love any opportunity to cosplay that’s close to home, we don’t have to travel,” explained Dawn Phillips of New Philadelphia, who with Noah Phillips, were dressed up with a medical theme. “We really like the whole steampunk genre.”

Dawn, who works as a nurse in real life, dressed in a slightly different nurse uniform.

“I’m a super duper, evil genius,” Noah added.

Local businesses, such as Within Harmony located at 182 S. First St., took part offering art, oddities, crystals, vintage finds, and all kinds of treasures.

Bully Soaps from New Tripoli sold a variety of soaps and scrubs, and helped support animal rescue with purchases.

Bobbi Jo’s Beauty Bar of Weissport sold a variety of jewelry.

The Sword Tag Society offered people a chance to try out as a Sky Pirate in the lower park. In the Sword Tag Society, members create whatever type of character they might like to be, such as a knight, an archer, or a thief.

The event offered food, music, crafts, sack races for children and adults, and a Steampunk Costume Contest, a tea party, an improv contest, and more.
