Schuylkill gets $1.6M for courthouse

The Schuylkill County Courthouse will get much-needed renovations thanks to the homecoming of $1.6 million in federal tax dollars.

The upgrade will modernize three elevators throughout the 1850 courthouse, replace aging exterior doors and windows, replace outdated rooftop HVAC units, install temperature monitoring sensors to improve energy efficiency, and repair retaining walls surrounding the historic structure.

The money comes by way of the fiscal year 2027 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, for which Congressman Dan Meuser, R-9, voted on June 5.

The legislation funds agencies, such as the Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, and allocates funding to programs that protect our nation’s food and drug supply, support America’s farmers, ranchers and rural communities, and ensures low income Americans have access to nutrition programs.

According to Meuser, the bill fully funds the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, benefits the special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children, the National School Lunch Program, school breakfast program and summer food programs. It also funds $1.1 billion for the Farm Service Agency, $1.226 billion for the Food Safety and Inspection Service, $1.642 billion for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and $1.795 billion for the Agricultural Research Service.

“With the passage of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, House Republicans are delivering on our promise to put American farmers, ranchers, and rural communities first,” Meuser said.

“But this legislation doesn’t just deliver much needed investments that support American agriculture, it also delivers nutrition assistance to those who need it most, protects our food supply and American farmland from foreign interference, and provides funding for renovations to the historic Schuylkill County Courthouse.

“I’m proud to have played a role in securing this funding for American farmers and for important projects in our district,” Meuser said.

County Commissioners Chairman Larry L. Padora said, “These improvements address critical infrastructure needs while helping ease the financial burden on local taxpayers. As a result, the county can now direct those resources toward other important priorities and initiatives that benefit our residents. This funding will help preserve this historic building for future generations while ensuring that Schuylkill County residents continue to have access to a safe, functional, and well maintained courthouse for years to come.”

“This is marvelous news,” said Commissioner Barron L. Hetherington. “We are fortunate to have a gorgeous, majestic courthouse with a one-of-a-kind clock tower. While our administration has worked diligently to maintain the building, critical upgrades to the windows and HVAC system have become increasingly urgent. Thank you to Congressman Meuser for always being there for Schuylkill County.”

Commissioner Gary J Hess is also grateful.

“I appreciate the efforts of Congressman Meuser. The courthouse is an old, historic building, and I have always said that it is the people’s house,” Hess said.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that it remains well maintained and operating smoothly not only for the residents we serve today, but for future generations as well. This funding will help us accomplish these goals by allowing us to make critical improvements while preserving an important piece of county history.”
