Tick time
The Tick Research Lab of Pennsylvania, located at 562 Independence Road, Suite 114, East Stroudsburg, reachable at wildlifedna@esu.edu, is cautioning people that “spring and summer months mark the peak tick season.”
In regard to the stages of life of a tick, the nymphs are considered to be the most dangerous for humans and pets. They are tiny (about the size of a poppy seed) and therefore difficult to spot and can be attached for longer periods of time. They are more likely to carry pathogens since they have had one blood meal and are responsible for transmitting most cases of Lyme disease. Nymphs are also active during the peak of outside activities, which increases the chance of exposure.
The lab continues to offer free basic panel tick testing for state residents through funds received from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. If you find a tick attached, don’t panic: Submit the tick to the lab for testing www.ticklab.org/test-my-tick.
