The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce presented a “Good Neighbor Award” to John Chandler, the first such award given to persons who do a good deed for another without thought of personal gain.

Handler was presented the award for the selfless heroism he displayed in rescuing a young child from a burning apartment on Aug. 27, 1984.

He plucked William Kleppinger Jr., then 5 years old, from the apartment and turned him over to a fireman, who took the boy from the burning building.

Earl Behr, Chamber president, said about the Good Neighbor Award, “It might be something really heroic, such as in the case of John Chandler, or it might be a simply act of kindness that it notable for the circumstances surrounding it.”
