Colts’ bats explode in rout of Wreckers

Marian was in need of a bounce-back, and it certainly got one during a trip to Weatherly.

The Wreckers played host to the Colts on Thursday, and were greeted with a lineup that showed no mercy.

All 17 members available on the Marian roster contributed to put together a 23-0 win.

“We just got done playing Williams Valley where we were up 5-0 going into the seventh inning and lost,” said Colts’ head coach John “Pilsey” Petrilyak.

“After coming off of that loss, this is exactly what we needed to propel ourselves moving forward.”

Not only did Petrilyak’s team keep the foot on the gas pedal, it also served as a great opportunity for less experienced players to get chances to hit, in which many of them provided results on the scoreboard.

He gave credit to his backup catcher Andrew Reaman, who went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two walks. Cole Defranciso also knocked in three runs with a 2-for-2 outing.

Four other Marian batters (Cole Jordan, Chase Grier, Brayden Grant and Cole Grochowski) knocked in multiple runs, and 11 different players finished with base hits for the visitors. Grant and Roman Bednarek joined Reaman and Defranciso as players with two hits.

Overshadowed by the offense was the “highlight of today” according to Petrilyak.

That was none other than Derek Yurkanin, a junior making his first-ever high school start on the mound.

The right-hander shut the Wreckers down through three innings, striking out three and only allowing two walks for a three-inning no-hitter. He only needed 41 pitches, 25 for strikes, to get the job done.

(Derek) looked really good on the mound,” Petrilyak said. “Had some nerves going into it but fought through it and threw really well today.”

On the other side, Weatherly head coach Jeremy Witner admitted that he wants his kids to put this game behind them.

At the same time though, he believes that every game has a message to take away from it no matter the result.

“There’s always an opportunity to learn,” he said. “We have to stay engaged and be ready when they put one at us, and be ready to make that out and back our pitchers up.

“I’ve just got to stay on top of them and make sure they’re staying focused on the game the whole time, and find a way to keep the morale up in situations like this.”
