Local Roundup: Results from March 26

Northern Lehigh posted a pair of wins on the diamond, as the Bulldog baseball and softball teams both defeated Wilson on Thursday.

Northwestern and Pleasant Valley also gained two victories. The Tigers won in softball and girls lacrosse, while both lacrosse teams for the Bears enjoyed successful outings.

BASEBALL

Lehighton-Pen Argyl

Cole Dietz’s RBI groundout in the top of the seventh helped Lehighton push back Pen Argyl, 3-2, for its first victory of the season.

Trailing 2-0, the Indians took the lead with a three-run seventh. Konner Nalesnik plated the Indians’ first runs with a two-run single.

Aiden Solt earned the win in relief for Lehighton, as he didn’t allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings. Cash White closed out the game for the save.

Solt, Braylon Hunsicker, and Chase Llewellyn also each had a hit for the Indians.

Northern Lehigh-Wilson

Parker Schaeffer hit a grand slam and drove in six runs to lead Northern Lehigh to its first win of the season, an 8-3 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Schaffer smacked a two-run double in the first inning, and added his slam during a five-run seventh inning to seal the victory. He also started the game, and scattered five hits and allowed three runs in five innings.

Wilson took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Coy Daubert’s walk tied the game in the top of the sixth.

Brayden Buskirk scored three runs and stole two bases for Northern Lehigh. Avery Kabrick pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory.

Palmerton-Bangor

Jason Carrelli drove in five runs on three hits to pace undefeated Palmerton to a 16-11 extra-inning slugfest win over Colonial League foe Bangor.

Carrelli hit a three-run double in the seventh inning that pushed the Bombers ahead 11-6, but the hosts rallied for five runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Palmerton exploded for five runs in the eighth, highlighted by Brady Reph’s two-run single.

Ben Negley had a pair of RBIs, and Luke Matsko had two hits for the Bombers.

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Southern Lehigh remained unbeaten and handed Northwestern its first loss with a 10-4 Colonial League victory.

Trailing 5-0 after two innings, the Tigers stormed back with a four-run third inning. Cole Dynda hit a two-run homer, and Lucian Sterling and Mark Shafer each added RBI singles.

The Spartans, who received three hits from both Gabe Moscato and Evan Przyuski, used a four-run sixth inning to clinch the win.

Shafer and Devin Rex each had two hits to pace Northwestern.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Pine Grove scored seven runs in the fourth inning, and the Cardinals soared to an 11-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The host Cardinals took advantage of five Tamaqua errors that helped account for nine unearned runs.

Wayne Snyder hit a two-run homer, and pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Pine Grove.

Landon Kamant and Gavin Edmonds each had two hits, while Luke Fronheiser knocked in the lone run for Tamaqua.

Tri-Valley snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-run fifth inning, and the Bulldogs went on to a 9-1 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Peyton Schley allowed a run and no hits, striking out eight and walking six in four innings of relief to gain the victory.

Gavin Yuricheck had the only hit for the Panthers, who also attracted seven walks.

SOFTBALL

Northern Lehigh-Wilson

In Colonial League action, Northern Lehigh cruised to a 20-4 victory over Wilson.

The Bulldogs’ Tegan Simms used both her arm and bat to lead her team. Simms earned the pitching win with five strikeouts, and ended up with three singles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Addison Smith reached base all four times at bat with two singles and two walks. She also scored two runs and had three RBIs.

Others contributing to the win were Annalisa Douglas (three singles, two runs, two RBIs) and Kylee Snyder (double, walk, three runs scored, three RBIs).

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Northwestern held off a late Southern Lehigh rally for a 5-4 Colonial League win that handed the Spartans their first loss of the season.

Ella Bressi ignited the Tigers’ three-run third inning with an RBI triple, which scored Molly Schlofer. Natalie Conner capped the frame with a two-run single, which scored both Bressi and Emma Freeman.

Freeman and Conner opened the sixth with back-to-back doubles, while Lily Kinnon added what turned out to be an important insurance run with an RBI single.

Conner led the way for Northwestern, going 2-for-4 with a single, double, run scored and three RBIs.

The Spartans’ Isabelle Witt had two singles, a double, and two RBIs.

Salisbury used an 11-run first inning to help gain a 15-0 Colonial League win over visiting Jim Thorpe.

Brinlee Neitz, Alaina Pavolko and Julia Carney all had RBI singles in the opening frame for the Falcons, while Taylor Wagner also knocked in a run during the early uprising.

Carney was the only multiple hitter in the game, finishing with two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Olympians’ hits came from Hannah Zacharies and Jessica Kozak.

Lehighton jumped out to an early lead, but host Pen Argyl came back to earn a 10-7 Colonial League victory.

The Indians, who scored three runs in the first inning, received a single, double, walk, two runs and an RBI from Sophia Wise.

Peyton Hausman added two singles and a run to the Lehighton cause, while Ava Serfass (two singles, walk) and Morgan Myers (double, walk, two runs, RBI) also contributed.

The Green Knights were led offensively by Reagan Knittle, who collected three doubles, two runs and three RBIs. Abigail Scherer chipped in with two singles and three runs.

Mahanoy Area broke open a tight game with a 12-run fourth inning and went on to post a 16-3 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Callie Zubris had two big hits in the fourth, delivering an RBI double and a two-run homer.

The Golden Bears also received strong offensive games from both Naomi Kowalick (two doubles, single, three runs, four RBIs) and Allison Killian (two singles, run, RBI).

Janessa Prudente and Danika Blazosky both had multiple hits for the Panthers. Prudente finished with two singles, a run and an RBI, while Blazosky added two singles and a run.

Pine Grove started off three separate innings with a homer, and the Cardinals powered their way to a 12-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Callee Leffler got the winners off on the right note, as she led off the game with a home run to center. Khloe Jessman started the fifth with a longball, while Jamie Dinger also went deep as the first batter in the sixth.

Dinger was 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. The Cardinals’ winning pitcher was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

Ceanna Gormley and Sophia Zrinski accounted for the Blue Raiders’ two hits.

Liv Fagan scored six goals, and Cali Colistra added two goals and three assists to lead Northwestern Lehigh to an 18-4 non-league victory over Allentown Central Catholic.

The Tigers had eight different players score, while Madelyn Lagowy and Ella Collins each had three goals and an assist.

Fagan, Colistra and Lagowy also controlled the draw circle, combining for 15 draw controls. Ashley Yacynych was big in goal, making eight saves.

Rylee Rath scored five goals and Lexi Green added four to lead unbeaten Pleasant Valley to a 17-5 victory over Liberty.

Peyton Knecht finished with two goals and four assists, while Brielle Halamar (3) and Gabby Kutzler (2) each added multi-goal efforts for the Bears.

Chris Ward scored five goals, and Steven Walter added four to lead Pleasant Valley to a 13-9 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Liberty.

Cooper Kromer contributed two goals and dominated the faceoff with 13 wins, while Austin Smith made 10 saves. Gavin Dorshimer also added two goals.

Central Cath.-Northwestern

Kendall Wikert and Tyler Kass powered Northwestern’s offense, but a fast start by Central Catholic proved to be the difference in a 16-13 non-league victory over the Tigers.

The Vikings built a 7-2 lead after one quarter, and held a 9-6 advantage at halftime as Northwestern battled back. The Tigers evened the score at 11-11 after three quarters, but Central Catholic pulled away with five fourth-quarter goals.

Wikert led Northwestern with seven goals, while Kass scored five times. Grayson Christman added a goal and an assist. Braydyn Uricchio contributed three assists. Logan Uricchio chipped in two assists.

Dane Kauker finished with seven saves for Northwestern.

Blue Mountain-Lehighton

Blue Mountain delivered a clean sweep, topping Lehighton 5-0 in non-league action.

North Schuylkill cruised to a sweep of Panther Valley.

The Spartans won the boys meet 101-29, and captured the girls meet by a 107-29 score.

Panther Valley’s Gino Williams led the way with three victories, winning the shot put, discus and javelin, while teammate Morgan Orsulak added wins in both the high jump and triple jump.

Nina Thorpe won the 800 for the Panther girls.
