Fire breaks out in Walnutport Burger King vent system
No one was injured after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the Burger King in Walnutport.
Fire Chief Michael Wentz, of the Diamond Fire Company in Walnutport, said the department was called for a commercial structure fire at the restaurant, located at 201 S. Best Ave.
“It was a confirmed fire in the vent system,” Wentz said. “We had flames and smoke showing.”
Wentz said everyone who was inside at the time of the incident was evacuated right away and there were no injuries.
“We had a fast response from our station,” he said. “The guys got there and held it and confined it into the hood system, which was good.”
Wentz said the Burger King employees and manager realized what was going on “and they called right away, which really helped to get us there quickly.”
He added that the fire was confined to the hood system, and added there was a lot of cleanup as they had to use dry chemical from the fire extinguishers to extinguish it.
“Everybody worked well together; it was the mutual aid and the quick response of our department that kept it confined,” Wentz said. “My hats off to (Walnutport Burger King owner) John Barto; he showed up there and he was outstanding to work with and very diligent in helping us remediate and take care of everything, along with his management team.”
Wentz said firefighters remained on scene for about two hours.
He said also assisting at the scene were the Slatington Fire Department, Lehigh Township Fire Department, Emerald Fire Company, Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services and the Northampton Fire Department RIT Team.
Wentz said the business has been shut down since the incident occurred.
“They started cleaning everything last night,” he said. “The Burger King employees were very thorough.”
Wentz added the business had to stay shut down until the state Department of Agriculture does an inspection.
He said the state Department of Agriculture was expected to be there sometime this morning, and that the Burger King should be open by sometime later today.
