Star of Valor quilters honored for work on Monroe piece
The Monroe County commissioners honored two quilters with certificates during their meeting on Wednesday.
Shelba Scheffner and Sharon Gower were honored for their gift of a Star of Valor quilt to Monroe County in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The large, red, white and blue quilt titled “A Nation’s Thanks — Sewn with Love” is hanging in the old law library at the courthouse in Stroudsburg.
Commissioner David Parker said that he was contacted by Connie Haydt from the Polk Township Veterans Memorial Committee about the possibility of donating the quilt to the courthouse.
“The Monroe County commissioners thank you for your wonderful contribution, making and donating a remarkable Star of Valor quilt celebrating America250PA for Monroe County,” Parker said.
Commissioner Sharon Laverdure asked Scheffner and Gower, who were at the meeting to receive their certificates, if they were together while they worked on the quilt. A plaque beside the quilt states that it was made by Shelba Scheffner and quilted by Sharon Gower.
Gower explained, “Actually, Shelba pieced everything. So all the pretty colors that you see there, that’s all on her. I don’t take credit there. When you actually look at the quilt, all the stitches that are in it that adds dimension to it, that’s me.”
