Tamaqua woman jailed after resisting arrest, then assaulting nurse

A Tamaqua woman who resisted arrest while being taken into custody on a warrant assaulted a nurse who was trying to assist her at a local hospital, according to Tamaqua police.

Kaylee Kern, 27, of Tamaqua, was committed to Schuylkill County Prison on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and aggravated assault following the Dec. 19 incident that began on the unit block of Lafayette Street.

According to police, officers saw Kern standing on the second story front roof of her home just before 6 p.m., and screaming that she was having a panic attack.

Police knew Kern was wanted on a bench warrant from the Schuylkill County Detectives Office for failure to appear in court.

Police said Kern refused requests to leave the roof and return to the home.

Police then asked Kern if they could enter the home, and she consented.

Officers went to the upstairs area in an attempt to get Kern to come inside. She refused and an officer then joined her on the roof and asked her to use a window to access the home.

As the officer had Kern come to the window, she then forcefully resisted and another officer grabbed her by her wrist. Eventually, police were able to get her inside the home.

While inside, she continued to resist and officers put her in handcuffs. Police said she was kicking so officers applied cuffs to her ankles.

Officers said they had to carry Kern to their patrol car, and then transported her to St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale for treatment for her behavior and because she said she had used methamphetamine.

At the emergency department, police said she resisted being placed into wrist restraints on the gurney.

At 6:40 p.m., a registered nurse who was treating Kern had to hold her right arm because Kern slipped her wrist out of the restraint.

Kern then pulled her left arm out of the other restraint, grabbed the nurse’s right hand, and yanked and twisted her wrist. The nurse suffered fractures to her wrist due to Kern’s actions, police said.

Kern was arraigned Friday before Tamaqua Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer and jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail. According to court papers, a preliminary hearing on the charges is scheduled for Jan. 27 before Bayer.
