Man killed on turnpike identified; 4 others injured

The man who was killed as a pedestrian on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Thursday morning was identified as a Bethlehem man.

State police at the Pocono barracks identified him as Luis A. Carlo, 32.

Carbon County Deputy Coroner Jason Nicholas pronounced him dead at the scene of the tragedy that happened at 3:27 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Police said three occupants of a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was involved in the crash and a second pedestrian, Katy V. Chabla, 22, of Allentown, were transported to area hospitals after the incident.

Police said Luis K. Fargas Carrion, 27, of Allentown, was driving the Jeep at the time. They said he was northbound around mile marker 76.2 in Franklin Township and approaching two vehicles, including a disabled vehicle and a rollback tow truck when he swerved onto the shoulder of the road and struck Carlo, who was outside a vehicle assisting the tow company with loading the disabled vehicle onto the tow truck. Police said Carlo was thrown after the impact.

The disabled vehicle was a 2010 Mazda Protégé that had a flat tire and being loaded onto a Dodge Ram rollback truck.

Police said Fargas Carrion was transported by personnel from the Lehighton Ambulance Association to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township, while Katy V. Chabla, 22, and Carol A. Chabla, 27, both of Allentown, and Stephanie A. Chabla, 31, of Hazle Township, who were passengers in the Jeep, were all injured.

They said Katy Chabla had serious injuries while Carol Chabla and Stephanie Chabla had suspected minor injuries. They were transported by Lehighton ambulance personnel to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem.

Police said Fargas Carrion is being charged for reckless driving.

The incident is being investigated by state police, the Carbon County Coroner’s Office and the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office.

The coroner’s office said an autopsy was scheduled to be performed on the deceased on Friday morning.
