Mesics became a go-to player for N’western

For the past few seasons, Logan Mesics has not been the go-to guy on the Northwestern Lehigh Tigers soccer team.

There was Matt Johnson, who reset the team’s all-time scoring record, only to have Jake Van Lierop come along in the 2024 season and reset the bar again.

All that time, Mesics was the guy in the background helping the big goal scorers get their goals.

Ironically, in 2025 — his senior season, Mesics still had to share the spotlight with Caelan Stangil and Cole Mertz when it came to scoring, but when the dust settled on the season, Mesics was the one that stood out in a talented Northwestern offense, collecting a spot on the all-state team, and as the Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Player of the Year.

With Northwestern’s offense having a leading man the past few seasons, the 2025 version had a dreaded three-headed monster with Mesics, Stangil, and Mertz.

The three combined to score 128 goals and 98 assists on the year, with Mesics’ 49 goals leading the way and his 29 assists ranking third.

“Everything that I have worked toward for the last four years has just come up to this, and to be able to see it pay off and ultimately get that achievement of making the All-State Team and being the Player of the Year is just nice to see,” said Mesics of his senior season achievements.

“I was able to look up to the guys before me who have accomplished things, guys like Matt and Jake and Jack (Mauro), and it’s nice to be able to follow in their footsteps and make it.”

While Mesics was biding his time, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a contributor to the success of the Tigers, including their two state championships in a span of three seasons.

He started 27 games as a freshman, and played 101 games overall during his four seasons. He finished his career with 87 goals and 60 assists, showing the versatility to take on whatever role was needed.

Mesics is quick to give credit to the players he’s been on the field with over the past four seasons, especially his two cohorts on the Tigers offense in 2025.

The three players were successful primarily because of the chemistry and familiarity that they had with each other.

The interesting dynamic of Mesics, Stangil, and Mertz is that they really never cared who got the goal or the assist. They truly were a group that played as one to help lead Northwestern’s success.

“I feel like from back to front, the whole team was just really able to rely on each other,” said Mesics. “With the three of us up front when one of us got the ball it was just really easy to find each other, and having those guys to play off of is a huge plus.

“It’s actually a huge thrill when you’re on the field and you pick your head up and see those two are making runs on goal. I wouldn’t want it to be any other way.”

Now, Mesics gets to start all over as the new guy when he takes to the field with Muhlenberg College next fall. Right now, Mesics is leaning toward a major in chemistry, but has not locked into that as a major.

He knows he’s going to get a great academic experience, and believes it will be the same on the soccer pitch as well.

“Obviously, the goal is to play as much as possible and win as many games as possible,” said Mesics. “The goal there is always to win the Centennial Conference, it’s a very good conference, so it’s always very competitive and then you go as far as you can in the NCAA tournament.”

For Mesics, the culture surrounding not just the team, but the entire college campus played a role in his decision to attend Muhlenberg.

He found a welcoming atmosphere, especially among the guys who will be his teammates and the coaching staff, and it didn’t hurt that he knew a couple of the players on the team.

“Everything was great and was what I was looking for. The entire campus is beautiful and the food is great, it’s like top 10 in the nation,” said Mesics of the post-game meals the team is given from a local establishment.

Before Mesics leaves Northwestern Lehigh, he still has a track season to compete in this spring, and looks forward to being as successful there.

Then, it’s on to graduation and a new chapter when he goes from a Tiger to a Mule.
