Walker Twp. officials deal with road business
Walker Township Roadmaster Chad Felty told the supervisors that the township will need to purchase 162 tons of road salt to meet the purchase requirements for the 2023-2024 contract period, which expires July 31.
The supervisors voted to approve the 2024-2025 contract for road salt, to purchase 270 tons during the year at $82.04 per ton.
Felty also said that the Cold Run Bridge on Catawissa Road passed its inspection.
The bridge is normally inspected every two years. However, it has been on a once-per-year inspection schedule because of previous issues with it.
“They liked what we did to it,” Felty said. “We still have a little more work to do on it; but, it passed.”
The bridge will be put back on the two-year schedule. The cost of the inspection that is done every two years is $2,700. The annual inspection is $2,000.
Other business
The 1996 F350 truck that the township listed to sell on Municibid did not sell. The highest bid was $7,200; the reserve was $8,000. The township will relist it.
• Township Solicitor Chris Riedlinger told the supervisors about an ordinance that is being suggested. The proposed ordinance would authorize New England Fire Company to seek possible reimbursement on some of the materials that are used in mostly vehicle accident emergencies.
Another municipality that Riedlinger work with was asked to enact an ordinance authorizing their fire company to seek reimbursement for items or materials expended at accident scenes.
“Some insurance companies have money for that as part of their coverage,” Riedlinger said. “But some companies, like Geico for instance, will not pay out unless there is a host municipality ordinance in place, authorizing the fire company to seek recovery.”
A company called PA Fire Recovery Services works on behalf of municipalities to try to recover costs from insurance companies.
Riedlinger drafted a sample ordinance for the supervisors to look at and decide how they want it to read. The supervisors will look at it and decide by the next meeting, then the ordinance would be advertised as is required.
