Dark Star Orchestra to appear at Penn’s Peak on Nov. 25

Dark Star Orchestra will bring its live Grateful Dead concert experience to Penn’s Peak at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Performing to critical acclaim for nearly 30 years and more than 3,300 shows, the seven-piece band recreates the Grateful Dead concert experience through performances based on actual Grateful Dead set lists from the band’s three decades of touring.

The group also creates original set lists drawn from the Dead’s extensive catalog, allowing fans both young and old to share in the experience while providing a continually evolving artistic outlet.

Dark Star Orchestra offers more than a recreation of the Grateful Dead’s sound. The band strives to capture the energy, familiarity and atmosphere that made the original concerts memorable for generations of fans.

Over the years, Dark Star Orchestra has featured guest appearances by six original Grateful Dead members: Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. Longtime Grateful Dead sound engineer Dan Healy also has performed with the band. Other notable guests have included Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish, Warren Haynes, Steve Kimock and many others.

“For us, it’s a chance to recreate some of the magic that was created for us over the years,” keyboardist and vocalist Rob Barraco said. “We offer a sort of historical perspective at what it might have been like to go to a show in 1985, 1978 or whenever. Even for Deadheads who can say they’ve been to a hundred shows in the ‘90s, we offer something they never got to see live.”

Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster outlets, the Penn’s Peak box office and Roadies Restaurant and Bar. Ticket sales at the Penn’s Peak box office and Roadies Restaurant are walk-up only. No phone orders will be accepted.

Penn’s Peak is a mountaintop entertainment venue in Jim Thorpe that can accommodate 1,800 concertgoers. The venue features a spacious dance floor, high ceilings, a concert bar and concession area, and a full-service restaurant and bar known as Roadie’s.

Guests also can enjoy a large open-air deck overlooking Beltzville Lake and a 50-mile panoramic view of northeastern Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Mountains. Penn’s Peak hosts concerts, weddings, banquets and other special events under its slogan, “Above the Rest.”

Conveniently located for residents of Hazleton, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Stroudsburg, the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and New York City, Penn’s Peak is situated 4 miles from Exit 74 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Northeast Extension.
