Fundraiser set for Albrightsville fire chief

The Albrightsville community is rallying around the man who was served the Albrightsville Fire Company for 20 years.

Chief Al Blew has been diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of a brain tumor.

A GoFundMe account has raised $8,758 so far of its $10,000 goal.

“I never knew people cared so much. He’s usually grouchy when he’s home.” joked his wife, Justine.

The tumor was removed on June 13, and they will meet with a neurologist team to discuss chemotherapy/radiation and treatment.

Justine says “the outlook is not good,” but Al has been resting comfortably at home and joking around.

Blew has been a firefighter since the age of 18, starting off in Somerville, New Jersey. Justine and Al grew up together in New Jersey and both moved here; they’ve been together since 2000, married in 2002.

Justine’s two children from a previous marriage are also involved in firefighting. Daughter Samantha Bellas’ husband, Brett, is the first assistant chief at Albrightsville Fire Company. Brett’s children from a previous marriage, 17-year-old Dylan and 18-year-old Cayden Bellas are, of course, part of the family tradition.

Son Robert Bruder is also a firefighter, whose 18-year-old twins, Karl and Emma Bruder are firefighters, starting by joining the junior firefighters.

Justine has served in many roles at the firehouse and currently is the director, overseeing bills and making sure maintenance is taken care of.

The couple don’t have much free time, but when they do Al likes to go to NASCAR races while Justine will go to a winery and enjoys reading.

Justine is clear that there is “a long fight ahead of us.” She said she was floored when she found out how well liked her husband was. “I felt wrapped in love from the community. “

Firehouse Secretary Brianna Marchese started the GoFundMe titled, “Our Chief our friend.”
