Weissport focuses on levee maintenance

Weissport remains concerned about the condition of its flood levee.

Council President Gene Kershner told borough council on Monday that the borough will look to advertise for a crew to come and submit a contract to cut the levee about three times a year.Council Vice President Susan Pywar said she is really concerned about the levee."They got to do something soon or otherwise, we're going to have (one heck of) a mess," Pywar said. "It's very scary to me."Kershner said he believes the levee is down by about 1 1/2 to 2 feet.In October, it was announced that a pier was replaced during the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge construction project in Weissport, which resulted in a section of the borough's flood levee being removed, Councilman Arland Moyer Sr. said at that time.Moyer said he was concerned whether the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which constructed the dike after a flood ravaged the borough in 1955, was notified of the matter. He said he was concerned about damage that could occur if heavy rain falls. The levee protects the borough from the Lehigh River, which runs parallel to the town. There have been past rains in which the Lehigh River level rose high enough to push against the levee.Moyer said the levee was last inspected by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection during the summer. Periodic inspections occur by the state, and often the borough has been taken to task for not keeping weeds cut or performing other needed maintenance. The bridge repair project began in the spring and remains ongoing.Removing snowAlso on Monday, Moyer told council the borough needs a snowblower, primarily to remove snow from sidewalks and the borough park.Councilwoman Brenda Leiby said children walk through the park to hop on the school bus."The pathways to the park should be cleared," Leiby said. "I think it's a safety issue for the kids."Moyer said the borough can't go out and fine people for not shoveling their sidewalks if they don't do their own.Other businessIn other business, council, on a 4-0 vote, with Councilwoman Paulette Watson absent, granted permission to the borough's secretary and treasurer to attend a municipal secretary training seminar in May at a cost of $80 per person.
