Towamensing Twp. tables fire company loan

A proposal for Towamensing Township to provide a loan to the fire company for the purchase of a new rescue truck was tabled Monday after supervisors determined the matter required additional public discussion.

Fire Chief Ryan Snyder told supervisors the fire company is considering consolidating vehicles and replacing its rescue truck.

The company has been looking at a 2012 rescue truck priced at $489,000 and asked whether the township would consider providing a loan if the department’s tanker is paid off.

Following discussion, township Solicitor Tom Nanovic advised against taking action at the meeting.

“This is not on the agenda and I don’t think we should amend the agenda for a $400,000 loan,” Nanovic said. “Residents should be aware of this and we need to have a special meeting.”

Supervisors agreed to table the matter and plan a public meeting at a later date.

Snyder also reported that the fire company currently has 22 active members and has responded to 93 calls this year, an increase of 15% to 20% over 2025. He noted the department will host a craft fair and yard sale Oct. 17 and a trunk-or-treat event Oct. 24.

Several other agenda items were also tabled during the meeting.

Supervisors rejected the township’s fuel bid after receiving only one proposal. The board also tabled awards for diesel fuel, heating oil and road materials contracts. ‘

Chairman Guy Seifert said pricing concerns remained, noting the bids could exceed allowable limits. Township Engineer Greg Haas will review additional bid information.

The board also agreed to advertise a recycling bid after determining clarification is needed regarding the 2025-26 contract.

In other business, supervisors approved an intermunicipal liquor license transfer during a hearing held before the regular meeting.

Attorney Jessica Pleskach represented applicant Lehigh Fuel and Fill #1, located at 7435 Interchange Road. The restaurant license, transferred from Lehigh Township, permits the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption and takeout. Approval was granted contingent upon reimbursement to the township for advertising and court reporter costs.

Supervisors also approved a $5 increase in garbage collection rates and authorized a letter to Parryville officials asking whether the borough wishes to continue having Towamensing Township provide trash collection services after the current agreement expires Nov. 25.

The board authorized advertisement of both the Per Capita Exemption Ordinance and a Data Center Ordinance, with adoption expected at the Nov. 5 supervisors meeting.

Michael Eatman was sworn in as fire police, and supervisors approved fire police assistance for the Palmerton Halloween Parade on Oct. 18. Don Bonnet, chairman of the Historical Commission, received approval to include a letter with township trash bills updating residents on restoration efforts at the Greenzweig School. The letter will also inform residents how they can contribute to or dedicate items to the historic one-room schoolhouse as restoration work continues.
