Drivers race to the finish line

Drivers in the annual Weatherly Hillclimb, sponsored by Fairway Subaru, raced against the clock to win the fastest time trial of the weekend. Over 90 cars were registered to race with three chances per driver to come up with the best time in their division. The track is a mile in length up a twisting hill lined only by a handful of hay bales, rocks and trees. Rob Campbell, driver of a 1974 Volkswagon Bug, said, "It's not about winning. It's all fun in the driving." Campbell has been racing for 22 years.

Many of the drivers have an incredible amount of experience, such as Jack Danko, who has been racing for over 16 years. He said, "The years went quickly; in fact you can say it went fast." Danko drives a DG Radical made in England with a Suzuki motor.A variety of cars and drivers could be found at the hillclimb from Danko's Radical to Grace Huntzinger's 1986 Volkswagon Scirocco. Huntzinger has been racing in the hillclimb for 10 years and has consistently won the high mileage award for her car.The hillclimb isn't just about racing; in fact it is the town's largest fundraiser of the year.Weatherly Library raised money to move into a larger building while Boy Scout and Cub Scout Pack 007 sold refreshments from their own tented concession stand.Fairway Subaru has sponsored the event for over 14 years.Representing Fairway Subaru by on the track was Al Corazza, who has driven a 2002 Subaru WRX in the event for the past 11 years. Corazza races for the bragging rights, adding, "it's all for fun. It's a big town fundraiser and benefits the community." The event continues to grow each year.
