Schuylkill County commissioners last week approved another round of change orders for the former Empire Beauty School in Pottsville, which is being renovated to house the county's Children and Youth Services Agency.
The changes total $13,567. They are:• Albarell Electric, $630 to install additional receptacles in lunch and training room, and $1,996 to install junction boxes and data conduit in room 114 for a total of $2,626.• Miller Bros. Construction, $3,187 to install birch chair rail and base molding in conference room.• Dauphin Data, $5,128.58 to purchase and install six Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant emergency phones.Commissioners approved the changes at a workshop session. Commissioner Gary J. Hess questioned the change orders, but appeared satisfied with county engineer Lisa Mahall's explanations.In May 2013, commissioners acquired the 21,000-square-foot building and two adjacent lots for $740,000 from brothers Dale and Franklin Schoeneman.Hess opposed the acquisition, through eminent domain, saying the cost of acquiring and renovating the site was too expensive.Commissioners In October 2012 had floated a $21 million bond issue to fund building projects; $2.6 million of that was earmarked to buy and renovate the 324 N. Centre St. building.Commissioners George F. Halcovage Jr. and chairman Frank J. Staudenmeier have said the county will be reimbursed for $500,000 of the cost through a government grant.Commissioners expect the work to be completed by the end of the year.
