Polk Twp. extends paving bid deadline

Polk Township supervisors voted to extend their paving bid deadline until Oct. 1.

“We have not received any bids,” Brian Ahner, chairman and roadmaster, said Monday at their monthly meeting.

The township usually receives bids from three companies: Bruce George Paving and Excavating, Hanson Aggregates and the H&K Group.

“One said they did not bid because the two larger companies usually win, and the other two did not bid for whatever reason,” said Ahner.

The supervisors discussed the increased price of blacktop per ton. Some municipalities are choosing not to pave this year and save the money for next year, hoping the cost goes back down.

“We can cast a line and see what we reel in,” said Supervisor Carl Heckman.

They voted 3-0 to extend the deadline into the fall, and to only do Dotters Corner Road. Their original bid also had Windy Hill Road.

They also planned to tar and chip some roads this summer but voted 3-0 to reject the tar and chip bid.

“Hopefully prices are better next year,” said Ahner.

• Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company will be at the intersection of Route 209 and Route 534 collecting donations on July 2.

• The supervisors voted 3-0 to start the bid process to replace the metal roof on the solid waste and recycling center, which is leaking, and to replace the shingles of an adjacent building.

• The supervisors discussed a holding tank ordinance. Currently there is no ordinance but there needs to be one to address properties with septic issues. There is one house in the township where a soil scientist found a problem and cannot fix it immediately. There needs to be a permanent holding tank and frequent pumping of this tank. The supervisors voted to pass this onto the planning commission.
