4 crashes keep crews busy in Tamaqua
Emergency responders were kept busy while tending to four crashes Monday in and around the Tamaqua area.
A female driver was able to get free and walk away after a rollover crash Monday morning near the bottom of the Hometown Hill.According to those at the scene, the car, a burgundy-colored Buick Regal, was traveling southbound on Route 309 when it appeared to hit an embankment near the Tamaqua-Rush Township municipal border.The car then flipped onto its roof and landed in the center lane.The crash happened before 10 a.m. and traffic came to a standstill in both directions.The driver was examined at the scene by members of the Tamaqua Community Ambulance.Shortly after 1:30 p.m., the former Keich's Pontiac Garage at 609 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, received damage to the garage door and a brick wall when it was struck by a Ford Flex.Reports from the scene say an 87-year-old male was attempting to park when his car struck the garage.The driver was extricated by personnel from the Tamaqua Rescue Squad and Tamaqua Fire Department before being transported by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital Miners Campus in Coaldale.The Tamaqua Police Department is investigating the accident. No further details were released.Also Monday afternoon, a crash along Route 309, on the Blue Mountain in West Penn Township, sent at least one person to the hospital.After striking a Subaru, a silver Ford Taurus continued traveling until hitting a tree on the east berm of the road in Lehigh County.The Subaru came to rest on the roadway in Schuylkill County.The driver of the Taurus was extricated from the wreckage by firefighters of the West Penn Fire Co. No. 1, then treated at the scene by members of the Penn Mahoning Ambulance and transported to a Lehigh Valley area trauma center.In yet another crash, a driver was seriously injured Monday evening along Route 443 in West Penn Township.The crash occurred at 5:30 p.m., about a half mile east of Route 309.According to police, the victim was traveling east in a pickup, being followed by several vehicles.When the group entered a passing zone, several of the motorists began to pass.As the vehicles approached the victim, he made a sudden left turn into a private driveway and into the path of the passing vehicles.A late model pickup struck the victim at the driver's side.The victim was extricated from the wreckage by members of the West Penn Fire Company No. 1, and flown by MedEvac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown.
