In Coaldale’s monthly meeting Tuesday night, President Angela Krapf clarified that the resolution for township residents to register their cameras with the borough will be completely voluntary.
“I think some people thought that the resolution would be enforced, but that’s not the case,” Krapf said. “Residents who would like to participate would inform the police department that they have private cameras and in the event of a crime nearby, police would request to view the footage with their permission.”
The resolution directly states that at no time will the police department have access to anyone’s camera or camera system. Rather, the resolution is there only for people who would like to give the police their name and address in the case that a crime would occur nearby.
Even after registering the camera with the police department, residents can deny the police access.
Coaldale resident Cheryl Horos said she is in complete support of the ordinance as a camera owner herself and only wishes it would’ve been enacted sooner so she could have caught the person who broke into her car.
According to the resolution itself, “the Coaldale Police Department’s Registration Program is designed to deter crime and promote public safety.”
