Weatherly expected to set superintendent’s last day
Incoming Superintendent Daniel Malloy attended the Weatherly Area School Board caucus meeting on Oct. 6. At the regular board meeting Wednesday, the board is expected to confirm that the last day of employment for Superintendent Teresa L. Young will be Oct. 27, a change from Nov. 7. Young was not present at the caucus meeting.
Another item to be considered at the regular meeting is approval of the Weatherly Area School District Comprehensive Plan for 2021-2024. Malloy said he would review it.
Approval of the Weatherly Area School District and Weatherly Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement, to be effective July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2026, will be on the agenda for the regular meeting, though it may not be acted on. The agreement is still being written up by the attorneys, and a vote will not take place unless the board members have enough time to review it.
School district Business Manager Dominick Bellucci explained that if it was not placed on the agenda at this meeting, it could not be adopted until November, and it is easier to remove items from the agenda at the last minute than it is to add them.
The board will be voting on extending the substitute teacher per diem rate of $130 per day until Dec. 31. Principal Anthony DeSpirito said he had six solid substitutes, but on some occasions more are needed.
A resolution to oppose the teaching of critical race theory will be on the agenda.
There were several use of facility requests. The Weatherly Music Department is asking to use of middle school facilities on Dec. 2 for the Winter Band Concert, and on Dec. 3 for the Winter Choral Concert, both from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The Weatherly Area PTA asks for use of middle school cafeteria on the second Tuesday of every month (except December) beginning at 7 p.m. for their meeting.
A verbal request by the Youth Basketball League to use the gym had to be turned down, according to DeSpirito, because the Health and Safety Policy adopted by the board prohibits outside organizations from using school facilities.
The board will consider using Jan. 3, 2022, as the makeup day for Sept. 2.
During public comment, Christine Houser asked about the progress of the paving project. A change order will be on the agenda in the amount of $7,077 as requested by the transportation/property committee in August; the original amount was over $16,000, but a credit due the district will be deducted.
Contractor Umbriac has been in contact with district solicitor Slusser Law Firm regarding finishing the project. Much remains to be done.
