An edict aimed to deter trespassing at its playground and canal areas is one step closer in Walnutport.
On a 5-0 vote, borough council on Thursday agreed to advertise a curfew ordinance in an attempt to help curtail vandalism.
Once adopted, the ordinance will dissuade trespassing at the playground and canal areas from dusk to dawn.
However, nighttime fishing will still be allowed at the canal.
The only anticipated cost to the borough is the purchase of about 10 signs.
Councilman David Stankovic broached the idea to council last month after he was asked by Walnutport Playground Association President Brian Filchner to have council consider a dusk-to-dawn ordinance.
Borough police Chief Pete Wayda said at that time a benefit to having an ordinance is that all fine money comes to the borough if there’s damage.
Wayda said at that time it helps when residents report issues they see to the police department. For example, someone who had just moved to the borough posted on Facebook that he saw someone throw a firework into the canal, which killed about 25 fish.
Councilwomen Patrice Hunsicker and Iris Blum were absent.
