Walker Twp. to receive federal funds

At Thursday’s Walker Township Supervisors meeting, Secretary Ann Ostergaard announced that they had received a letter from Gov. Tom Wolf regarding the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. This plan entitles the township to a maximum allocation of $105,297.22 from the federal funding.

Board members will be looking at the requirements on how they can use the funds.

Road projects

Roadmaster Chad Felty discussed the upcoming 2021 road projects for Walker Township. They are:

• Mountain Road, the area not done last year, about one and a half miles, single coat.

• Kettle Road from the dirt road to Valley Road, single coat.

• Swamp Lane from Valley Road to Shady Lane, single coat.

These projects on Shady Lane are alternate projects, depending on how long the initial projects take:

• Lower portion of Shady Lane, where shoulder was widened, down to Catawissa Road, single coat.

• Upper portion of Shady Lane from Swamp Road intersection to the dam.

• Shady Lane from the dam to Valley Road, single coat.

Felty mentioned some difficulty in the projects.

“There’s a lot working against us. It’s the lateness of the season and the scarcity of stone.”

Council voted to advertise for road seal coat bids, and will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. July 15 to open the bids.

A section of Kettle Road that is a dirt road is part of another project covered by a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources dirt and gravel road grant.

According to Chairman Craig Wagner, “We had the engineer out and he put a plan together, which went through DCNR, it went through the design period, and we were issued the grant. It will be in three phases. The first phase is about $86,000. They want to go from the ground up. In addition to the seven existing drainage pipes, which will be replaced and upgraded, we will be putting in five more. Overall, the plan is to reduce the amount of water coming down off the mountain.”
