Historical societyThe next meeting of the Nesquehoning Historical Society will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the borough building, 114 W. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning.The special guest presenter will be Dave Matsinko, who will be singing old-time mining songs and performing on the mountain dulcimer, banjo, guitar and mandolin.At age 16, Matsinko was playing the trumpet in a nine-piece "Chicago" style rock band called "Icarus." He graduated in 1973 from Panther Valley High School.He is a recently retired teacher of the Lehighton Area School District, where he had incorporated music into his learning support and multiple disabilities classrooms for many years.Everyone is invited. Light refreshments will also be served.VFW auxiliaryThe regular monthly meeting of the auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held on Oct. 11 at the Post Home. President Cheri Santore presided at the session.Members present reported sending 50 cards since the last meeting. A bloodmobile collection, sponsored by the post and auxiliary, was held on Oct. 7; two members donated on that date. Dues are now being collected for 2015-16. Buddy Poppy weekend at Redner's will be held on Oct. 30 and 31 and Nov. 1.This provides funding for our disabled veterans and auxiliary programs.The annual Christmas Party will be held at Lengyel's on Dec. 15, at 6 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. Note this change in meeting date due to the Carbon County Veterans Day Parade being held on the usual meeting date. Jim Thorpe will host that parade on Nov. 8, beginning at 2 p.m.
