The Walnutport Police Department brought new business to the table for Wednesday night's borough council meeting.
Chief Peter Wayda introduced and nominated Nicholas Hartman to be the new part-time police officer for Walnutport.Hartman was voted in unanimously by the council. Hartman, 23, is a recent graduate of Allentown Police Academy and a current resident of Walnutport.Wayda also made a motion for the borough to take part in a new narcotics recycling program.Palmer Township Police Department is currently running the program and recently contacted Wayda about participating.Outdated medications and seized narcotics can be dropped into a tamper-proof drug reclamation box in the borough hall on Lincoln Avenue.A similar program was previously run by the Drug Enforcement Agency, but was dropped in 2014 due to budget cuts, Wayda said.The current program would be operated by the county.
