Train honors late civic leader

Yvonne Sidella, co-owner and head chef of Vonz, the restaurant in the restored Victorian train station in Tamaqua, holds a model railroad car created by Bill Gaddes of Lake Hauto in honor of his friend, the late Ken Smulligan.

Smulligan, a former Tamaqua borough councilman, was integral to the restoration of the 1874 Pennsylvania and Reading Railroad station in Tamaqua, which also houses the restaurant. The station had stood vacant, vandalized and deteriorating. Its shell was scheduled to be demolished to make way for a parking lot when Smulligan and a small band of concerned residents formed a group called Save Our Station, and with Smulligan as president raised $25,000 to buy and restore the property. The landmark station, called Depot Square, is now fully restored, and the jewel of the borough. Smulligan had wanted a restaurant in the station, and Vonz, owned by Sidella and her husband, Richard, is housed in an accurately restored original room.Smulligan died Sept. 9, 2013.
