Veterans, military deserve respect

Editor,

My views may not be popular by some. However, our veterans fought so I can freely voice my beliefs. Leadership starts at the top, and a president’s words matter. Agitating people is not the way to lead. Many people have told me we don’t know whether to trust our president’s words or whether he is lying.

First, remarks he made about Sen. John McCain were atrocious. To say he wasn’t a hero because he was captured and he preferred those who weren’t to be heroes. McCain spent five years as a POW and suffered greatly.

Our veterans past and present and their families give selflessly to keep us safe and to enjoy our lives. Thank you to all for their sacrifices. Our military is a touchy topic to me. I lost an uncle in WWII at the age of 19 years old. I saw the anguish my mom and grandmother suffered from his loss. A second uncle served honorably in the Korean War and by the grace of God made it back home. Finally, my father-in-law was one of those POWs in WWII. So I know what heroes are! I don’t appreciate them being disrespected in such a manner by our president.

Our president has access to the brightest minds of our country. However, he surrounds himself with “yes” people. With no military experience, he says he knows more than the generals. If you disagree with him like Secretary James Mattis or Gen. John Kelly, you are viciously attacked. Then he denies his words and actions about these fine men.

I hope our military people and families will search their hearts and conclude President Trump isn’t what our country needs for four more years. We need someone with honesty, empathy and real leadership and caring.

Sincerely,

Betty J. Wolfe
